I’ve just read the news that NFL Coach Marty Schottenheimer has been suffering from early-onset Alzheimer’s Disease for the past five years. I will always treasure the memories of sitting with him at Chargers Training Camp when no one was at his table. No player wants to sit with the coach during camp, and I couldn’t let Coach sit alone! We’d talk about his family, his memories of watching my dad and his team play, and his interest in the Civil War. One particular day, a yellow jacket was flying around my plate. “That bee is persistent,” I said. He suddenly slammed his hand down, squishing the bee into pieces. “So am I,” he said firmly. That sums up Coach pretty well. He reminded me of an old Civil War general, leading a team of men from all backgrounds in expert fashion. His persistence and commanding presence has always made him someone you want to follow. And even though I was just a graduate intern, he’s pretty much one of the few people in the whole organization who ever remembered my name and said hello. Hats off to one of the greatest head coaches of all time. Your career is one worth celebrating, and you have a wonderful family to support you during this challenging time. Praying for you!
